Partnering for Literacy: Launching Decodable Kits Through Public Libraries
We are always exploring innovative ways to extend structured literacy support beyond the classroom and we’re excited to share the launch of a new community partnership designed to do just that.
Our public school system and town library developed a set of Decodable Kits that are now available for families to check out. This project was built with both accessibility and instructional alignment in mind, aiming to provide meaningful at-home practice in phonics and word recognition for early readers.
The collection includes 38 total kits (two copies each of 19 unique sets) to support parent understanding and engagement. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Other public libraries have already reached out, expressing interest in replicating this model in their own communities. This initiative demonstrates the powerful role libraries can play in literacy ecosystems. By leveraging community partnerships and aligning with evidence-based practices, we can increase equitable access to the kinds of texts young readers need most.
If you are an educator, literacy specialist, or library professional interested in launching a similar initiative, we’d love to connect and share what we’ve learned.
Let’s continue working together to build strong, confident readers inside and outside of the classroom.
